Which stable rug is suitable for my horse?
As soon as the temperature drops below freezing, you usually need a thick stable rug for your horse. Kentucky Horsewear has many different thick stable rugs. The filling of these stable rugs starts at 160 g and goes up to 400 g. If your horse needs an extra layer of warmth, you can use one of our under rugs.
The thickness of the filling of a stable rug depends on a number of factors. The outdoor temperature plays a big role, but it is extremely important to consider your horse when making a decision. Is your horse or pony clipped? Do you have an older horse? These factors play an important role as well.
Which stable rug is suitable for my horse at which temperature?
At a temperature between 10°C and 15°C, a 100 g stable rug is a good choice for clipped horses. Is your horse not clipped? Then a thin stable rug is sufficient for keeping your horse warm in most cases.
Is the temperature between 0°C and 5°C? Then a horse that spends most of the time in the pasture can use a turnout rug between 100 and 200 g. A rug between 200 and 400 g can be best for a clipped horse.
Does the temperature stay under freezing both night and day? Try working with layers by using one of our under rugs to increase the total grammage of the rugs and keep your horse warm on these cold winter days.
In your search for a thick stable rug, it is always important to look at the weather conditions, but also at your horse’s needs. If the rug is too thick, your horse will sweat and that can make them sick.

What is the difference between a stable rug and a turnout rug?
The main difference is the outside fabric. Turnout rugs are waterproof and made from a tougher material to withstand all kinds of bad weather. Stable rugs are designed to used indoors only.
How do you measure a rug for your horse?
A well-fitting rug is essential. It is best to measure your horse or pony to find out which rug size they need. To measure, take a measuring tape and start in the middle of the chest/breastbone and then measure a straight line to the back of the horse. Stop measuring when you get to the rump.
Then use the number of centimetres to check our size guide for which rug size your horse needs. You will find our size guide on every product page.
A rug that is too small or too big will hinder your horse. A rug that is too small will inhibit your horse’s movements and chafe. But a rug that is too big can move over the body so there are often friction spots created on the horse’s shoulders.
