What is the purpose of a dressage girth?
Dressage riders use dressage girths to make sure they stay safely in the saddle. A good dressage girth will also prevent irritation to a horse’s belly, while of course also ensuring your horses’ legs have good freedom of movement when walking, trotting or galloping. That’s why it’s important to choose a dressage girth that’s a perfectly fit for your horse’s needs and your existing saddle. If your horse has sensitive skin, a dressage girth with our artificial sheepskin is an excellent option.
What’s the difference between a regular girth and a dressage girth?
A dressage saddle has long girth straps, so the girth is shorter than a jumping one. This is to avoid the girth from bulging under your leg. A dressage girth should not sit too low because then the girth straps will irritate your horse's belly.
What size dressage girth does my horse need?
When measuring the girth size of your horse, it’s better to ask someone to help you. This person can hold the saddle in place. Measure with a tape measure from the second or third hole on the girth strap of one side of the saddle. The person helping you can hold the measuring tape in place while you go under the belly to the other side of the saddle. Here you also measure from the second or third hole.
The length you get is the size of girth you need. If you measure the girth too high on the saddle, it won’t be easy to tighten the girth. If you’re planning to buy a sheepskin girth, you don’t need to worry about needing a bigger size, you can just buy the girth size you normally have.
How do I keep my dressage girth clean?
If you’re looking to buy a dressage girth that both you and your horse will enjoy, then our versatile collection surely has the right fit for you. All our girths are easy to clean because the artificial leather does not absorb water and the vegan sheepskin components can simply go in the washing machine at a temperature no higher than 30°C.
Finally, we recommend that you buy our tack cleaner alongside your dressage girth. You should always use a clean cloth to clean and polish the girth. Choosing a Kentucky Horsewear girth will ensure you get even more enjoyment from your dressage training sessions and competitions.
How do you pick a dressage girth?
