The impact of flies on horses

After this period of summer rains, it is finally time for some sunny days. In general, higher fly and mosquito activity may be expected following a period of rain due to the dampness that provides hatching sites for these insects. Depending on the local conditions, insect populations may begin to decline within a few days to a week.

However, if there are continuous problems with standing water or wet regions, the problem may last longer. Because different fly and mosquito species have varied lifecycles and behaviors, the exact period of their presence can vary.

We all know horses can experience a lot of stress when flies are bothering them. Not only do the horses experience a constant buzzing around their ears, the flies also have the horses’ skin itching and leave painful bites (which could lead to infections). That is why it’s important we protect them the best we can by using a fly rug and fly mask.

Breeding mares are more likely to be living outside 24/7, which means they are more prone to being bothered by flies and other insects. But what exactly is the impact of this on their own health and mental wellbeing and that of their foal.

What is the impact of stress on breeding mares?

Breeding mares that become excessively nervous or stressed can have an impact on their reproductive health and potentially affect the developing foal. The hormonal balances of the mare are affected by stress and anxiety.

A lot of stress can lead to:

- irregular cycles (which makes it difficult to accurately time breeding potentially reducing the chances of conception)

- reduced fertility

- embryonic loss or early pregnancy failure (because the environment necessary for embryo implantation and development is disrupted)

- higher risk of abortion (in severe stress)

- negative developmental impact on foal (impact on foal’s temperament and behavior)

- impact the mare’s milk production

To ensure the best possible outcome for both the mare and the foal, it's important to provide a calm and comfortable environment for the pregnant mare. When solely focusing on the topic of flies and other insects, a fly mask and fly rug mean a more relaxed mare or horse in general.
