How do I keep my horse clean in the summer?

It’s that time of the year again. Hot summer where you can enjoy the sun from the early mornings until the late evening. Did you know it is extra important to have a good grooming routine during these days? Your horse will be sweating way more and sweat combined with dust and other dirt can cause an extremely itchy coat. No need to worry, we have a few tips to keep your horse clean in the summer.

1. Take advantage of fly rugs

During the summer, a lot of bugs will be annoying your horse. Therefore, it is important to use a fly rug to protect your horse. This will give your horse a more peaceful time in the field. Another big advantage: your horse will not get as dirty!

2. What is a good summer grooming routine?

In the summer, it’s just as important as in the winter to have a good daily grooming routine. As your horse doesn’t have long winter hairs, your grooming routine will look a bit different. We will give you our best tips to make your horse shine.

One of our summer grooming essentials is the Middle Brush Medium. This brush flicks off the dust and sweat and can be used for all body parts.

After this one, you can use the Middle Brush Long. This one takes off the last pieces of dust before putting a rug or saddle pad on. Wondering how to keep your rugs dust free? This brush is perfect to brush off your rug before putting them back on your horse.

How do I make my horses coat shine?

To end your grooming session, you can use the Sheepskin Grooming Glove. This brush distributes the natural oils of the skin which causes a shiny and glowing coat.

3. Bath your horse regularly

A grooming routine is good, but it sometimes just isn’t enough when the days are extremely hot or when you train your horse intensively on a regular basis. In the summer months, a shower from time to time is a good idea.

How often should I wash my horse?

You can rinse your horse every day without a problem but try to limit shampooing to just a few times per month. Shampooing your horse every day is not good for his skin as it can cause dry skin or hair loss. Our Towel Rug is a must have when you are washing your horse. This rug will dry your horse extremely fast after training or bathing.

4. Keep your brushes and rugs clean

You can put a great effort in keeping your horse clean, but if your brushes and rugs are dirty, it will be a lost cause. Dirty rugs can cause irritation and even rubbing marks on your horse’s skin. Luckily, our rugs are machine washable at 30 degrees. If you use your rug on a daily basis, we advise washing your rugs at least once a month.

How do I clean my brushes?

To clean your brush, Tap the brush onto a stiff surface to remove excessive dirt. You can also brush them together. After that, damp them into soapy warm water, clean through the bristles with your fingers and rinse. Make sure to let them dry completely before re-using them.

Our advice is to clean your brushes at least every two months but clean them more if needed.

And now you’re all set for summer!
