The story behind the hurricane rug

The hurricane turnout rug is a unique rug on the market. But next to its technicalities, the rug also has quite a story to it. Continue reading to find out more about the hurricane collection.

How the idea started

Our product developer Claudi used to be a groom for international top riders. Now and then, she still does some grooming for special events like the Olympics or the World Equestrian Games to get insights from the equestrian market. She also Groomed in 2018 at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon.

Together with the Swiss rider Felix Vogg, she went to North Carolina for the games. During the time she was there, hurricane Florence was announced. The wind got really heavy, and the rain was pouring out of the sky. She even got to sleep in the stables to watch the horses. The category 4 hurricane did luckily not hit Tryon, but the contest was postponed one day.

While our product manager was sleeping in the stables, she had the idea to create a rug that could resist extreme weather conditions like what they were going through. After she came back, she started doing some research for the fabrics. When she saw a yellow fisherman jacket on the streets, she knew it had to be a similar kind of material. And that’s how the concept of the hurricane rugs was born.

The hurricane fabric

The hurricane fabric is very similar to the yellow fisherman jackets. Unlike other waterproof rugs, where the waterproof coating is on the inside of the fabric, the hurricane rug has this coating on the outside of the fabric. This is never done for a rug before, but it has many benefits. The coating makes the rug stronger, for example, so you don’t need to worry about your horse tearing it. It also doesn’t need a new coating or fluor carbon treatment after washing, as you can just hose off the fabric. If your horse is outside 24/7 this rug will be a lifesaver.

The hurricane rugs

The hurricane collection comes with 3 turnout rugs, available in 0g, 50g, and 150g. There’re also 2 detachable necks in 0g and 150g. Both the rugs and the necks are lined with our signature artificial rabbit skin. There is also a raincoat for horses in the hurricane fabric, this protects your horse and tack during competitions. All the hurricane products can be washed at 30 degrees (hang to dry) or hosed off.
