How to store your rugs after winter
The days are getting longer and warmer again. Time to change our winter rugs back to the spring ones. But don’t take off the rugs and store them just like that. In this blog, we’ll tell you how properly to take care of your horse’s rugs after winter and how to store them securely for next year.
Let’s be honest, we want to get rid of winter as soon as possible. Yes, this also includes storing your rugs without washing. But if you take good care of your horse’s rugs, they will last a lot longer. And actually, taking care of your horse’s rug is not as bad as it sounds.
How to clean your horse’s rugs
First, make sure to check the rug. If there are any rips or tears, make sure to fix them (or get them fixed). Then wash your rugs. Try to remove as many hairs as possible beforehand and brush the outside of the rug to get rid of manure, mud, or other dirt. If you don't wash your rugs, it will start to smell really bad after summer. But it could also damage your rug as the dirt is completely dried up to the fabric.
You can choose to wash the rug yourself if your washer is big enough. But almost every tack shop has a laundry service where you can get your rugs cleaned. They can also renew the waterproof coating or repair tears and rips if necessary. If you wash your rug yourself, make sure to read the washing instructions carefully and check if it is 100% dry before putting it back. If it’s still a little damp, this could cause mold on the rug.
After your rugs are clean, it’s time to store them. To store your rugs, you could either use the bag they came with or use our rug bag. The rug bag can store up to five rugs and is the perfect storage for all your winter rugs. Fold them carefully and double-check if all the straps are still there. And now you’re good to go for summer, and you don’t have to wash your rugs when winter starts again.
