Taizo Sugitani: A Story of Trust, Horses, and the People Behind the ride.

Some stories in the equestrian world are measured in medals and milestones. Others are quietly built through years of trust, care, and the unspoken understanding between humans and horses. The journey of Taizo Sugitani, Japan’s most enduring Olympic show jumping rider, reflects both.

Born in Izumi, Japan, in 1976, Taizo has spent nearly three decades representing his country at the highest level. With seven Olympic appearances between 1996 and 2024, he holds a historic place in Japanese equestrian sport. His best results include an 11th-place team finish at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and 15th individually in Athens 2004. Across seven World Equestrian Games and multiple podiums at the Asian Championships, his career has been defined by excellence and consistency.

More Than Just a Rider

But if you ask Taizo what helped him maintain that level of performance over so many years, the answer isn’t just found in training, talent, or even the horses themselves. It’s in the people. One in particular stands out.

Between 2014 and 2016, Claudia Weber, now Product Manager at Kentucky Horsewear, Dy’on, Grooming Deluxe, and Velari, was by his side as his groom. Their working relationship became a foundation of his daily routine and success, both in competition and at home.

“There’s one thing about Claudia that still amazes me – she can read what a horse needs before anyone else even notices. She knows the horses so well and has an incredible intuition for their health and well-being...”

A Bond That Goes Beyond the Arena

Their connection grew beyond the ring. What began as a professional partnership evolved into a friendship built on shared values: family, work ethic, and the belief in always lifting others forward.

“What began as a professional relationship... has turned into a true friendship. My wife and I believe in surrounding ourselves with good people — people who celebrate your wins and stand by you in the tough moments too..."

Today, that connection lives on, as Claudia helps guide and support Taizo’s two young sons, who are now stepping into the world of show jumping. It’s a continuation of a story built on trust and understanding, the kind that takes years to develop and only minutes to recognize.

A Broader Impact in the Sport

Claudia's influence didn’t begin or end with Taizo. Over the years, she has worked with many talented riders and grooms, learning from them and offering insights in return. Her ability to notice what others might miss, and to respond with care and precision, has earned her the trust of some of the sport’s most respected names.

Lara de Liedekerke-Meier

Lara is a top Belgian eventing rider, the first from her country to win a CCI5* at Luhmühlen in 2024. She’s competed at the Olympic Games, World Championships, and holds several national titles.

“I’ve been privileged to work with Claudia at the very beginning of my career... She brings out the best in both horse and rider, often turning a good combination into a great one...”

Groom of Jos Verlooy

Jos Verlooy is one of Belgium’s top show jumping riders, with European team gold in 2019 and multiple national championships to his name.

“To work with Claudia is something truly special... There is no better partner to have by our side.”

Felix Vogg

Felix is a Swiss Olympic eventing rider. He has competed at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games and became the first Swiss rider to win two CCI5* events, including Maryland in 2025.

“Claudia puts her whole heart into every horse... She combines knowledge, intuition, and passion – with a sixth sense that only very few possess.”

An Instinct That Sets Her Apart

What ties all these voices together is a rare and valuable quality: an instinctive understanding of horses, built not just on experience, but on genuine care. Claudia doesn’t just manage products or logistics. She understands the reality behind every ride, every round, and every quiet moment in the stable when horses speak without words.

At Kentucky, we’re proud to have Claudia leading the way – not only as Product Manager, but as someone whose values and instincts continue to shape the future of the sport. Her story is one of dedication, growth, and the powerful results that come from working in harmony with horses and people alike.
